Entering the stunning Sagarmatha National Park through the hamlet of Jorsalle, we find our way through lush green forests adorned with a wide variety of floras and faunas. The journey takes us to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest. After a rest day at Namche, we head out to enjoy the stunning views of the Himalayas. The rising altitudes are reflected through the snowy landscapes as the journey passes through Debuche leading towards Dingboche.
Taking a day off at Dingboche, we climb the Dingboche Ri (5075m), which provides stunning views of the Himalayan panorama. Heading to Lobuche, the journey takes us to Kalapatthar. It provides close-up views of the many Himalayas, including Mt. Everest (8,848.86m), which are truly remarkable. Through the sandy bed at Gorakshep, the rugged Himalayan trail reaches Everest Base Camp before heading down to Lobuche again.
The descending route guides us to Pangboche and then to Monjo. Eventually, it leads to Lukla concluding our journey. Permit for Everest Base Camp Trek
To protect the breathtaking beauty around Mt. Everest and other mountains in the Himalayan region, the Nepalese government charges permit admission fees.
Permits are required for all national parks in Nepal, including the Sagarmatha National Park. When compared to the overall cost of your vacation to Nepal and the Everest Region, the cost of the permits is rather minimal. It is a long-term investment in the beauty of this region, with its snow, trees, ice, pastures, and culture.
Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay may have made the Khumbu on the map, but other mountaineers and trekkers have since enjoyed the beauty of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Goyko Lakes, and much more. Let us work together to keep this place as it is for future trekkers and Nepalis.
You will require the following permits for the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek:-
- Permit to enter the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality (NPR 2000 per person)
- Entry Permit to Sagarmatha National Park (NPR 3000 Per Person)
Documents needed for trekking permits
For the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality and the Sagarmatha National Park Entrance Permit, you need the details from your passport. For the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project Entry Permit, two photos are required, and a brief form must be completed as well. Only local currency may be used to pay for all of these costs.
Note: Your organization will secure all the permits for the planned trek
Accommodation Facilities at the EBC Trek
The following are the common places to stay available during the EBC Trek:
- Tea Houses (Lodges): Tea houses are the most prevalent type of lodging along the trail. Small guesthouses with modest amenities like a bed, blankets, and a communal bathroom. Although some tea houses have adjoining toilets, they are often more modest than hotels throughout cities.
- Dining Halls: Tea houses also offer dining halls where trekkers can eat hot meals. These dining establishments often feature a wide range of foods, including traditional Nepali, Tibetan, and Western fare. Keep in mind that at higher elevations, meal options may be limited.
- Tents/Camping: Some hikers prefer to tent rather than stay in tea houses. If you pick this option, you must carry your own camping equipment or arrange for it to be provided by a trekking company.
- Luxury Lodges: A few luxury lodges have been erected along the EBC trail in recent years to cater to trekkers looking for more luxurious accommodations. These lodges offer more amenities and services than conventional tea houses, but they are limited in number and may require advance reservations.
Because of the difficult landscape and remoteness of the country, facilities may become more basic as you go higher in height throughout the EBC Trek. Furthermore, during high hiking seasons (spring and autumn), the tea houses might become busy, so make advance bookings, especially if visiting with a trekking organization.
Best time to trek Everest Base Camp Trek
When choosing the trek to Everest Base Camp, there are a few things to take into consideration, including the weather and crowds. Over the course of the year, both the climate and the number of people who hike the Everest Base Camp route have changed dramatically. You can better choose a period of the year that suits you and your preferences by taking into consideration both.
Everest Base Camp in Spring (March to May)
Every season offers unique benefits. For instance, the months of March through May have some of the finest visibility and a higher than average number of sunny days. You are also treated to displays of spring flowers. Particularly cheery are the expansive red and pink rhododendron covers.
In April and May, Everest Base Camp itself also comes to life, so if you want to experience the energy and thrill of a fully functional base camp, now is the time to go. The downsides include the possibility of some heat haze in late April and early May. Additionally, May has the ability to be foggy, increasing the likelihood of unknown mountain peaks.
Everest Base Camp in Monsoon (June to August)
Trekking to Everest Base Camp during the monsoon season (June to August) might be difficult. The weather during this period is marked by heavy rainfall, which can make the trails muddy and slippery. The constant downpour can result in landslides in certain areas, making some trek routes impassable. Thick cloud cover during the monsoon season often obscures the otherwise spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks. On the flip side, the rain brings out the vibrancy of the flora, blanketing the lower valleys in lush green.
Everest Base Camp in Autumn (September to November)
On the other hand, the season from late September to November is a popular one due to its comfortable daytime temperatures. Many people prefer the months of late October and early November because they typically have more consistent weather and excellent visibility. Although it can get colder during these months, many people consider it a fair trade-off for the bright skies and expansive views.
Everest Base Camp in winter (December to February)
Trekking to Everest Base Camp in winter (December to February) can be tough. It’s very cold, and there’s a lot of snow, which can make the trip difficult. Many places to rest and sleep on the higher trails may be closed because of the snow and cold. Still, winter brings clear skies and fewer people, so you get great views and a quiet trip. The cold can make it harder to adjust to the high altitude. Usually, only skilled and fit hikers do winter treks to Everest Base Camp. They plan well, have the right gear, and use an experienced guide. It’s also important to have insurance that covers emergencies caused by bad weather.
Everest Base Camp’s greatest tourist season
The Everest Base Camp trek route can get fairly crowded during peak seasons due to its growing popularity in recent years. Every year, up to 30,000–40,000 individuals travel to Everest Base Camp! Up to 500 people can set out on the trek route each day at the busiest times of the year.
Important Information for the EBC Trek
- Due to chaos at the airport in Kathmandu, flights to the Everest region now depart from Ramchhap. Ramchhap is many hours’ drive from Kathmandu, so we leave around 1 a.m. to make the early morning flights. Due to heavy winds in the mountains in the afternoons, there are no day or evening flights.
- Due to inclement weather, flights may be delayed or canceled. We propose that you plan for a two or three-night stay as a backup. That example, if your international flight from Lukla is on Monday, do not schedule it for Tuesday. It is best to book on Thursday or Friday.
- There will be an additional payment of roughly $250 to $300 if you want to take a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.
- For lone travelers, there is no additional price for the package pricing. If you are traveling alone and prefer a single room, please add the single supplement during the checkout process.
- Porters can only transport 20kg. As a result, please pack lightly. We will give you a bag/duffle bag that porters can easily carry.
- Please supply us with a copy of your passport at the time of booking, as we need this for domestic flights.
- Meals are included in the hike price. This excludes hot or cold beverages, alcoholic beverages, and additional food. Breakfast is provided in Kathmandu, but not lunch or dinner.
- There are additional costs for hot baths ($3 to $5) and battery charging ($1 to $3).
- In the highlands, weather can change radically and rapidly, so please be patient if there are delays. Please heed your guide’s suggestion if he needs to adjust the plan due to the weather.
- Drones are not authorized in the Everest Region unless you have a specific license. This is due to the large number of unscheduled helicopter flights in the skies. Permission is difficult to obtain, so leave it at home unless you absolutely need a drone.
- The weight limit on airlines is 15kg per person. Any excess can be paid at the airport’s airline counter. It should be noted that this is only possible if the flight is not already overweight. Please pack lightly once again.
Normal Day on the EBC Trek
While the scenery and views of the mountains change on a daily basis, some things remain constant. For example, each day of the walk begins and ends in the same way:
We begin our day early, at 6 or 7 AM., when we all gather in the teahouse (lodge) dining area for breakfast. Breakfast is ordered the night before so that the teahouse and the owner may prepare it for us on time. Prepare your luggage for the porter to carry after breakfast. He will proceed at his own speed. All you need is a day pack containing whatever you believe you’ll need for the day, such as a water bottle, sunscreen, snacks, and so on.
Then you can begin hiking with your guide. The route will be familiar because your guide will have identified the highlights of the day the night before. We continue walking until we reach the trail’s lunch halt. This will almost certainly take place at a small settlement. After lunch, continue on the trail until you reach the overnight teahouse.
It’s time to choose your dinner from the menu at the teahouse before relaxing with other travelers or writing in your diary. During or after dinner, the guide will discuss the itinerary and scenery for the following day. Before you go to bed, don’t forget to order breakfast.
Then came Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s started expedition. It took place on Nepal’s southern hills. Hillary and Norgay realized that having a storage facility at the mountain’s foot made more sense than trekking the entire length of the Khumbu Valley whenever supplies were needed.
Essential Details for the EBC Trek
- The cost of the expedition includes all meals. Alcohol, additional snacks, or hot or cold beverages are not included in this. In Kathmandu, only breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are not.
- Hot showers cost between $3 and $5 more, and battery charging costs between $1 and $3.
- Unless with a specific license, drones are not allowed to be used in the Everest region. This is due to the high number of unauthorized helicopter flights. If you don’t need a drone, leave it at home because getting authorization can be difficult.
- For $25, you may get a wifi card in Lukla or Namche Bazaar that offers 10 or 20 GB of data for usage over a 30-day period in the Everest Region. Because it will depend on the environment and location, we are unable to guarantee the wifi’s quality.
- Please be patient with us if there are delays because the weather in the mountains can change severely and rapidly. If your guide decides to change the schedule, follow the advice.
- Due to traffic at the Kathmandu airport, flights to the Everest region now depart from Ramchhap airport. We depart Kathmandu around 1 am in order to make the several-hour trip to Ramchhap in time for the early-morning flights. Due to the strong winds in the mountains in the afternoons, there are no flights during the day or at night.
- Weather-related issues can cause flight delays or cancellations. We encourage you to include a two- or three-night backup plan. That means if your scheduled departure from Lukla is on Monday, do not book your international flight on Tuesday. The best days to reserve are Thursday or Friday.
- There will be an extra cost of between $250 and $300 if you choose to fly in a helicopter from Kathmandu to Lukla.
- For solo travelers, the package rate does not include any additional fees. However, please put on the single charge at check-out if you are traveling alone and would want a single room.
- The weight restriction on airlines is 15 kilograms per passenger. At the airport’s airline counter, you can pay for any excess. Keep in mind that this is possible if the flight is not already overweight. Again, please don’t overpack.
- When making your reservation, kindly provide us with a copy of your passport because we need it to schedule domestic flights.
