Rara Lake Trek Brief Insight

Enjoy Rara Lake Trek to the westernmost region of Nepal by exploring the deepest and the biggest freshwater lake in the country. Rara Lake is a sparkling oligotrophic lake located deep inside the alpine coniferous forests of Rara National Park, Nepal’s smallest national park. Reaching the discreet site requires a lengthy commute in either a car or a flight with few days of trekking. The extreme natural setting and magnificent views attract flocks of travelers every year to this surreal destination.

Getting There

The 15-days Rara Trek begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu. Accompanied by a trekking guide, you’ll take a flight to Nepalgunj. It is a thriving city in western Nepal situated 366km southwest of Kathmandu. From here, you’ll catch another 20-minute flight to Jumla.

The trekking commences from Jumla and advances north towards the Rara National Park.  You’ll walk through the lushly vegetated subtropical and coniferous forests. Furthermore, you’ll cross Danphe Langa Pass (3500m) via Chautha and Bhulbuhle village before entering the Rara National Park. After obtaining the permit, you’ll begin ascending the forested trail. This trail is enriched with pine, spruce, and juniper trees to Dhotu village. The 167m deep Rara Lake lies just a few hours from Dhotu.

Once in the premises surrounding Rara Lake, you can spend your time exploring the pristine lake site. You can also indulge in boating in the lake facilitated by the local Nepalese Army. At noon, you can climb the local Ghurchi Lagna (3450m) from where you can get a great sight of the entire lake.

The smallest national park of Nepal is also home to some endangered animals like red panda, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, jackal, Himalayan Thar, yellow-throated marten, and more. Afterward, you’ll descend through Ghorosingha, Sinja, and Jaljala villages to reach Jumla. From Jumla, you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu via transit at Nepalgunj. The trip concedes at Kathmandu. Rara Lake Trek can be undertaken during two major seasons, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), for better visibility, weather, and accessibility.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, one of our representatives will receive you and bring you to your hotel. You’ll meet the trek guide at the hotel and briefly discuss the trip. Afterward, you can choose to relax or go out to take a stroll. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and transfer to Hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll drive to the airport with your guide to take the hour-long flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is a warm city lying close to the Indian border, which also serves as the gateway to far-western Nepal. You can find diverse culture, language, and cuisines in this city. In Nepalgunj, you can choose to visit the local market, mini-zoo and nearby villages before resting for the night.

Day 03: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jumla 2370m.

After early breakfast, you’ll leave Nepalgunj and take a short flight to Jumla. The high hilly landscape of Jumla is one of the least accessible places in Nepal. It lies in the foothills of the Sisne Himalayan Range and serves as the gateway to Karnali Region. En route, you can enjoy a breath-taking view of serpentine roads amid towering hills. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 04: Trek from Jumla to Danphe Langa 3130m/5-6 hours.

The trek officially starts from Jumla and heads northward. You’ll pass through Jumla Bazaar and climb the uphill trail passing through Sisnamul (2830m). You’ll enter a lush forest and make way to Chere village. The trail becomes steeper here on and climbs through meadows heading to Danphe Lagna Pass (3500m) offering scenic views of Patrasi Himal (6860m) and Jagdula Himal (5785m). The trail then descends gently through the forest and reaches Danphe Lagna, where you will be staying for the night.

Day 05: Trek from Danphe Langa to Chautha 2770m/5-6 hours.

Today, you’ll leave Danphe Langa and make your way to Chautha. You’ll descend through the forest of firs, birches, walnuts, and bamboo and arrive at Sinja Khola via Hiran Duski. After crossing the river, the trail follows to Nyawre and climbs to Kabra. After a steep climb through Bhara village, you’ll arrive in Chautha for the overnight stay.

Day 06: Trek from Chautha to Dhotu 2380m/4-5 hours.

The trail continues along the uphill path crossing pasture fields at Chante Chaur and arriving at Bhulbule, which serves as the entrance to Rara National Park. After obtaining the permit, you’ll make your way inside the park and hike gradually to Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3450m). From the top, you can enjoy the scenic view of Karnali River and the snowy peaks bordering Tibet. The trail then descends through a spruce forest towards Pina. After a brief trek passing through Jhyari Khola, you’ll arrive in Dhotu and rest for the night.

Day 07: Trek from Dhotu to Rara Lake 3040 m/3-4 hours.

The trek begins with crossing a stream and a sharp climb to the village through the cedar forest from where you can catch the first sight of the pristine Rara Lake. After a brief descent, you’ll arrive at the mesmerizing Rara Lake. Overnight at camp.

Day 08: Exploring Rara Lake 3040m.

After an early breakfast, you’ll embark on a full-day tour around Rara Lake. Also known as Mahendra Lake, the lake offers scenic views as well as a calming environment for you to have a peaceful moment with yourself and nature. You can indulge in boating in the turquoise-colored Rara Lake while soaking in the ambiance. You will also catch the sight of Chuchemara Peak (4039m) on the south, and Ruma Kand and Malika Kand on the north. You can hike through the surrounding forests and enjoy the local wildlife before heading back to your campsite for the overnight stay.

Day 09: Trek from Rara Lake to Ghorosingha 3190m/4-5 hours.

Leaving Rara Lake behind, you will cross a flat trail before ascending the Ghurchi Mara Pass (3710m) to head to the other side to Ghorosingha. You can catch the final glimpse of the lake from the vantage point of Ghurchi Mara before heading through the forested trail to reach Ghorosingha. Overnight in Ghorosingha.

Day 10: Trek from Ghorosingha to Sinja 2440m/4-5 hours.

The trail today drops to Laha alongside Ghatte Khola. You’ll descend through the steep trail until Botan (2895m) and make your way towards Diyabala Danda, which lies south of Ghorosingha. The route skirts south-east above the high fields of Lumsa from where you can enjoy the beautiful sight of Sinja Valley. The trail then descends to Okharpati village and makes way to Sinja, where you will be staying for the night.

Day 11: Trek from Sinja to Jaljala 3270m/5-6 hours.

From Sinja, you’ll cross the Sinja Khola on a wooden bridge and head towards Dhubi Khola. After passing a few rustic villages, you’ll cross a few more streams before arriving in Jaljala Chaur for the overnight stay.

Day 12: Trek from Jaljala to Jumla 2370m/3-4 hours.

From Jaljala it’s a short distance to Jumla Bazaar. You’ll climb through the subtropical forest to yet another meadow which lies just below the ridge. A pleasant descent will take you to Jumla, the headquarters of Jumla district. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 13: Fly from Jumla to Nepalgunj and afternoon fly back to Kathmandu.

Today, you’ll catch a scenic flight for around 45 minutes from Jumla to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, you will take a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Once at the airport in Kathmandu, you’ll be greeted by our representative who will escort you back to your hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 14: Take leisure day in Kathmandu

Today is a leisure day. You can either choose to relax in your hotel or go out for a sightseeing tour of the city. The historical Kathmandu city is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can enjoy visiting various historically and culturally important places around Kathmandu, including Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Final Departure from Kathmandu

Today you’ll bid adieu to Nepal. Our representative will drive you off to the airport so you can catch your flight back home.
