The age-old Sherpa culture and their unique festivals have also attracted many cultural enthusiasts to the region.

Before traveling, however, one needs to be aware of the facts and details of the desired destination. So, below are some exciting facts about the Everest region.

1. The Two Basecamps

There are two ways to reach the summit of the tallest mountain, from Nepal and Tibet, hence there are two base camps. The north base camp lies in Tibet while the south one is in Nepal. Both of these base camps are frequently packed with tourists, but those who like adventure prefer the south base camp as north base camp can easily be reached via vehicle since the route is well developed. In case of Nepal, travelers need to trek for several days from Lukla, the nearest flying destination to trek in the Everest region. There are no other ground facilities to explore this region except for trekking.

2. Maiden Year

Even though Mt Everest is a popular summit destination, there have been instances where there have been fewer climbers. In the year 1974, there were no records of any mountaineer scaling the tallest mountain and hence this year is known as maiden year.

3. Best Time To Travel

The Himalayas can be a cruel place if you don’t take the weather and climate into consideration. Due to the high altitude, the weather is unpredictable, which can be a hindrance to trekkers. So, the best time to travel the Everest region is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons. The weather during these seasons is clear and stable, making it favorable for trekking. During these months, there are festivals, both local and national, which you can enjoy heartily. During the monsoon (June-August), there are heavy downpours most of the time, which can make the trails slippery and dangerous. Meanwhile, during winter (December-February), snowfall can be a hassle for many travelers.

4. The Climbers

Thousands of climbers have reached the summit, over the years, but only a few have made names. The first climbers, Sir Edmund Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa have certainly paved the way for many ambitious mountaineers to be remembered for the summit. From the oldest to the youngest, people from all around the world have flocked to this mountain. Jordan Romero from America was only 13 years old when he reached the top while Yiuchiro Miura was the only 80 years old to do the same, claiming the title of the oldest person to climb Everest. Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa from Nepal have gained the title for the most ascents by summiting a total of 21 times.

However, not every climber’s attempt has been successful. According to the statics of 2019, a total of 307 people have lost their lives in Everest since 1922. The major reasons for this are bad weather, avalanche, altitude sickness, and sometimes sheer carelessness.

5. Mt. Everest’s Growth

Even though there have been debates over the increase in height of Mt Everest, recent researches have shown that the mountain gains 4mm height every year. The continuous collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates is the reason behind it. A Nepalese team of experts recently finished measuring the new height of Mt Everest, the result of which will be published in 2020.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, the Everest region is a favorite among people who love mountains and treks. The vast landscape with beautiful glaciers, lakes, and mountains is accompanied by the charming Sherpa people and their culture that has a definite impact in the region’s fostering tourism. It is safe to say that the indigenous community of Sherpa is also one of the main reasons for people coming here, for they are the most reliable when it comes to the mountains.
