The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a remarkable journey into the lives of the Thakuri and Tibetan communities which are far from the modern luxuries. Getting There
The journey to Phoksundo Lake begins at the Kathmandu Valley where we take a day to prepare for the trek and obtain the necessary permits for travel. Then, we head towards the Terai city of Nepalgunj. Exploring the stunning city of Nepalgunj for the day, we make our way towards Juphal the next morning.
After a brief rest at Juphal, we begin our trek heading towards the hamlet of Dunai for our first night on the go. The trek picks up the pace as we make our way past the hamlets of Tarakot and Laina Odar before resting at Nawarpani.
The next stretch of the journey sees us travel towards the hamlet of Dho Tarap where we take a day off for acclimatization. Enjoying the cultural and natural beauty, we make our way towards the Numa La Base Camp. Ascending to the top of the Numa La (5238m), the mesmerizing landscapes of Dolpo unravel. With the pride of the astounding climb still clinging on, we begin the descent from the pass.
The next day brings us the Bagala La Pass located at an altitude of 5,170m as we head towards Tench. The stunning lake of Phoksundo is next on our list. It is surrounded by the High Himalayas the icy blue waters make for a perfect stop for resting. After a day off in the lap of the lake, the journey heads back to Juphal crossing Chhepka. Hence, it signals the end of our trek.

Detailed Itinerary
Day01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m)
After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport our representatives will meet up with you and you will be driven directly to the hotel. After freshening up from the day’s travel you will be introduced to the guides and other members of the staff who will also brief you about the journey. With the activities of the day coming to a close you are free to head back into the local area enjoying the lovely views of the sunset. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day02: Permits Procedure
Today, we take an extra day in the valley to prepare our trekking permits for journeying into Dolpo region. We can also enjoy touring around the UNESCO world heritage sites of the valley which include Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath. We also make sure all our equipment are ready and all the necessary documents are in place for our journey. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (150m) and transfer to hotel
The beginning of our journey today we make our way to the city of Nepalgunj. Located towards far west Nepal, the Terai city borders India to the south. Thus, it also has massive influence from the southern counterpart upon the culture, religions, and way of life there. Contrasting the valley the region boasts a different landscape altogether through the flatlands. Here, we can explore the local areas and make final preparations for the trek. Overnight in Nepalgunj.
Day04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal and Trek to Dunai (2150 m)
The journey kicks off as we head towards the town of Juphal. The forty-five-minute flight takes us towards the Himalayas as we enter the Dolpo region. Enjoying the views of the landscapes from up above, we land at Juphal. From here, after a brief rest, we begin our trek. For the first day, we make our way to the hamlet of Dunai. Overnight in Dunai.
Day05: Trek from Dunai to Tarakot (2540 m) 5-6 hrs
Today, we make our way towards Tarakot. The journey heads towards the eastern front out of Dunai alongside the southern bank of Thulo Bheri gradually ascending through the lovely Hilly trail. The journey takes us deeper into the valley through the lush green forests adorned with pine and fir trees. The final stretch ascends all the way to Tarakot as we cross the Thuli Bheri River on multiple occasions. Overnight in Tarakot.
Day06: Trek from Tarakot to Laina Odar (3375m) 4-5 hrs
The day begins alongside the southern bank of Bheri River which heads towards the valley created by Bharbun Khola. Guided by the stunning views of Putha Hiunchuli (7,246m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167m), we head towards Laisicap beyond which the trail heads towards the western bank of Tarap Khola. Heading north, the journey arrives at Khanigaon beyond lies Laina Odar. Overnight in Laina Odar.
Day07: Laina Odar to Nawarpani (3780 m) 5-6 hrs
The trail heads out of Laina Odar crossing deep gorges towards the Himalayas. After trekking for a couple of hours, the trail becomes relatively open as wooden planks and flat stones cover the trek. The journey takes us to Chhyugar from where we head over the stream crossing towards its western bank all the way to Nawarpani. Continuing on, we reach the hamlet of Toltol which is a winter refuge for the Upper Dolpalis. Overnight in Nawarpani.
Day08: Trek from Toltol to Dho Tarap (3950 m) 6-7 hrs
One of the longer days of our journey today we head to the stunning hamlet of Dho Tarap. For the first part, the journey heads alongside the north western bank of Tarap Khola heading to Ghyamgar. Crossing Ghyamgar we make our way towards the eastern bank reaching Sisaul from where the trail once again heads to the western bank of Tarap Khola leading to Langa. The final stretch sees us ascend up the hill before descending to Dho Tarap. Overnight in Dho Tarap.
Day09: Excursion around Dho Tarap for acclimatization
Today, we take a day off at Dho Tarap for acclimatization purposes as well as exploring the Dho Tarap hamlet. The hamlet was once a famous trading post for Tibet and Mustang during ancient times. With countless stunning destinations surrounding the area including the Ribo Bumpa Monastery. Kakar Monastery is another of the famous destinations of the area. There are numerous other monasteries and viewpoints around the village to visit as well. Overnight in Dho Tarap.
Day10: Trek from Dho Tarap of Numa La Base Camp (4350 m) 4-5 hrs
The journey begins with an uphill ascend heading out of Dho Tarap. The trail is an easy one as we slowly gain altitude reaching the hamlet of Tokyu. Crossing Tokyu, we come across a river from where the journey takes us to Khanger. Enjoying the stunning views of Shering Gompa towards the north, the journey takes us through the stunning Himalayas as we begin our ascent through the rugged trail all the way to Numa La Base Camp. Overnight in Numa La Base Camp.
Day11: Numa La Pass to Danigar 4510m via Numa La Pass 5238m 6-7 hrs
Today we cross the Numa La Pass heading over to Danigar for the night. The journey is not an easy one as we begin our uphill struggle through the rugged Himalayan trail gaining altitude as we go. With the stunning views of Dhaulagiri Himalayan Range alongside the mesmerizing Norbung Kang (6,085m) on the horizon, the journey takes us right to the top of Numa La Pass (5238m) where we are welcomed by fluttering prayer flags. We descend over to Danigar for the night.
Day12: Trek from Danigar to Temche 4000m via Bagala La Pass (5170 m) 5-6 hrs
The day begins with a soft ascent quickly changing to an uphill struggle as we rapidly gain altitude heading towards the summit of Bagala La Pass (5170m). The sacred Chortens signals our arrival to the top of the Bagala La Pass which sports mesmerizing views of Norbung Kang (6,085m). The way down is a pleasant one as we gradually descend through the ravines and towards the beautiful pasture land of Temche. Overnight in Temche.
Day13: Trek from Yak Kharka to Phoksundo (3600 m) 4-5 hrs
Today, we make our way towards the stunning Phoksundo Lake. Following the ascending trail heading towards Ringmo, we head into lush green forests adorned with pine, fir and juniper trees. Enjoying the stunning views of the Himalayas, the journey takes us all the way to Ringmo which is also a famous Bon settlement. The final hour of the trek ascends through the stunning landscape leading to Phoksundo. Overnight in Phoksundo Lake vicinity.
Day14: Explore around Phoksundo Lake
We explore around the lake and the hamlet of Ringmo for the day. The day begins with lovely views of the sunrise reflected in the icy blue waters of Phoksundo Lake. Touring the Ringmo village we make our way to the Tshowa Monastery, the Bon-Po monastery located on the shores of the Lake. Enjoying the stunning views we also make time to visit a few of the monasteries spread throughout the region. Overnight in Phoksundo Lake vicinity.
Day15: Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Chhepka 6 hrs
Heading away from Phoksundo we begin our ascending journey leading up to a hill. Looking back the lake of Phoksundo offers its final goodbye as we head through the arid land making our way towards the hamlet of Polam. The journey then enters the lush green forests filled with pine and juniper trees winding through the gorgeous landscapes to reach Chhepka. Overnight in Chhepka.
Day16: Trek from Chhepka to Juphal 6 hrs
The final day of our trek today we make our way back the town of Juphal. Heading out of Chhepka we are greeted by the stunning hamlet of Shyanta. Through the lush green forests filled with rare wildlife and exquisite floras and faunas, the trail takes us on pleasant hilly landscape leaving the Shey Phoksundo National Park behind and onwards to Kalagauda. Crossing Dangiwada, we come to the hamlet of Juphal. Overnight in Juphal.
Day17: Juphal- Fly to Nepalgunj —afternoon flight back to Kathmandu
The day begins early as we head out of Juphal and back to Nepalgunj. After a brief rest and lunch, we make our way back to Kathmandu once again enjoying the diverse landscapes from up above. Back at Kathmandu, we head directly to the hotel resting from our days of travelling. You are also free to head down to the local region enjoying the lovely evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day18: Buffer day for flight delay and cancellation due to bad weather
Today is separated for contingency purposes as sometimes flights heading out of Juphal or Nepalgunj gets cancelled due to bad weather and depending on the season you are trekking on the chances vary. If everything else goes according to plan the departure day will be pushed one day earlier.
Day19: Departure from Kathmandu
Once again our representatives will drive you to Tribhuvan International Hotel just in time for your flight back home. We hope you had a lovely time with us and we look forward to seeing you again.
